Hymenoplasty in Croatia

Hymenoplasty is the surgical reconstruction of the remnants of the hymen, performed at the request of an adult patient. At Polyclinic Maletić the procedure is performed by Duško Maletić, MD, MSc, specialist in surgery and urology, and the consultation and your medical records are confidential.

Hymenoplasty is a sensitive procedure performed at the request of an adult patient. The examination serves to assess the anatomical findings, the possibilities of reconstruction, your expectations, and the voluntariness of the decision, with confidential handling of your medical data.

What hymenoplasty is

What hymenoplasty is

Hymenoplasty is the surgical reconstruction of the hymen. The hymen is not a closed membrane but an elastic rim of mucosa around the entrance to the vagina, with a natural opening. Its appearance and shape differ from woman to woman and can change during development, through physical activity, injury, medical procedures, or sexual intercourse.

When enough remaining tissue exists, its edges are surgically prepared and joined with absorbable sutures, preserving the physiological opening. If there is not enough tissue for simple joining, the possibility of a different reconstruction is assessed according to the findings. Absorbable sutures do not need to be removed.

The procedure is, as a rule, performed under local anesthesia and on an outpatient basis. After recovery, the patient goes home with instructions on care, limitations during healing, and the plan for the follow-up examination.

Is this for me?

Who can consider the procedure

Hymenoplasty is considered for an adult patient who seeks the procedure voluntarily and after an informed conversation. You do not have to justify your decision, but it is important to talk about your expectations and about any possible pressure from a partner, family, or community, fear of consequences, or threats to your safety. If such circumstances exist, it is important to share them confidentially with the physician before deciding on the procedure.

At the examination we assess the anatomy, the amount and condition of the remaining tissue, the possibility of reconstruction, and your expectations of the procedure. The findings determine the choice of technique and what the procedure can — and cannot — achieve.

Before you decide

What is good to know in advance

The hymen is elastic and anatomically highly variable tissue. Bleeding at first intercourse is not the rule — neither before nor after reconstruction — and the appearance of the hymen cannot reliably prove whether a woman has had sexual intercourse. Hymenoplasty therefore cannot “restore virginity,” nor can it medically confirm it. The World Health Organization and United Nations agencies have warned that examining the hymen is not a reliable way to prove sexual history.

If the procedure is being considered because another person expects bleeding or a particular appearance, it is important to know that hymenoplasty cannot guarantee that. The procedure must therefore not be relied on as certain protection from another person’s reaction, or as medical proof.

It is important to understand these facts before deciding, so that your expectations match what the procedure reconstructs and what it cannot guarantee.

Realistic expectations

What the procedure changes — and what it does not

The goal of the procedure is to reconstruct the rim of mucosa around the entrance to the vagina. The final appearance and firmness of the reconstructed tissue depend on the initial findings, the technique used, and healing.

The professional literature on hymenoplasty is limited, and no single surgical standard exists. It is not possible to guarantee whether first intercourse after the procedure will involve bleeding, pain, or a visible change. The procedure reconstructs tissue, but it can neither confirm sexual history nor guarantee a particular reaction of the body.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

How is hymenoplasty performed?

The procedure is, as a rule, performed under local anesthesia. When enough remaining tissue exists, the edges of the hymen are surgically prepared and joined with absorbable sutures, preserving the physiological opening. If there is not enough tissue, the possibility and technique of reconstruction are assessed at the examination. The sutures do not need to be removed — they dissolve gradually.

Is the procedure done on an outpatient basis?

The procedure is, as a rule, performed on an outpatient basis, and after recovery the patient goes home the same day with instructions on care and recovery. A follow-up examination is scheduled according to the treatment plan.

Do I have to explain why I want the procedure?

You do not have to justify or morally explain your reasons. At the examination, however, it is important to talk about what you expect from the procedure, whether the decision is entirely voluntary, and whether the reconstruction can achieve what matters to you.

Is the conversation confidential?

It is. The data about the examination and the procedure are confidential and subject to physician–patient confidentiality and the rules of personal data protection. Only authorized persons involved in organizing and providing your healthcare have access to them.

How much does the procedure cost?

The price is determined after the examination, according to the findings, the required technique, and the extent of the procedure. The exact amount and what it includes are confirmed before an appointment is scheduled.
