Scalp Mesotherapy in Croatia

Hair that has thinned, lost density, and keeps ending up on the brush is usually first fought with shampoos and vitamins. Scalp mesotherapy delivers nutrients directly into the skin of the scalp, where the follicle does its work. Before we suggest a single treatment, a scalp analysis shows whether mesotherapy would help you at all — because for some people it will not.

Ana Maletić, MD, PhD, at Polyclinic Maletić

Mesotherapy is usually the entry treatment for the scalp — the one people think of at the first signs, while the hair has not yet visibly thinned. That is exactly why we measure the scalp first, and only then agree on a series of treatments.

Is this for me?

What scalp mesotherapy is and what is actually injected

Scalp mesotherapy is the delivery of a preparation of nutrients directly into the skin of the scalp, with very fine needles and at shallow depths. The goal is for the substances to reach the layer where the follicle works, instead of staying on the surface or passing through the whole body.

This is a medical procedure, not a cosmetic treatment. That means an examination comes first, and the composition of the preparation is set for each patient individually, not according to a preset scheme.

What goes into the preparation

Preparations for scalp mesotherapy most often contain vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other substances that support the work of the follicle and the condition of the scalp skin. With us, the composition and amount are put together individually, based on your findings — so two patients of the same age with similar hair will not necessarily receive the same mix.

Mesotherapy improves the conditions in which hair grows, but it does not change the reason the hair started falling out.

Why an injection, and not a shampoo or a pill

Most people come to us after several months of ampoules, shampoos, and supplements. The problem with that route is not the ingredients but getting them to where they need to be. Applying them into the skin of the scalp achieves higher local availability of the substances with less exposure for the rest of the body — which is the basis of the method.

That also explains why mesotherapy cannot replace treating the cause. If the body lacks iron or the thyroid is not working as it should, that finding is treated with medication, not with an injection into the scalp.

The right indication

Who benefits most from scalp mesotherapy

The people who benefit most are those who come while the change is still in its first signs. When the hair has started to thin but the follicles are still alive and active, the therapy has something to work with. The further the process has advanced, the less it is reasonable to expect from it.

Situations in which we suggest it

  • Weakened and damaged hair — a thin hair shaft that breaks easily and struggles to hold a style.
  • Early-stage hair loss — when density is dropping and the part line is slowly widening.
  • Hair loss after childbirth, illness, or a longer period of stress — when the condition has settled but recovery is not coming.
  • Preserving hair quality — in people whose process is known and predictable, where the goal is to slow it down.
  • Maintaining the results of other scalp therapies — when the state that has been achieved needs to be kept.

Mesotherapy, PRP, or polynucleotides — what decides

That question comes up at almost every consultation, because all three therapies target the same scalp condition. They differ in what is applied. A PRP treatment uses your own plasma, polynucleotides are a purified preparation with a regenerative effect, and mesotherapy delivers nutrients composed according to your findings.

The decision is not made by a treatment’s popularity but by what is measured on the scalp. Combining two therapies is common, because the same scalp can need both nutrition and regeneration at the same time.

“Mesotherapy nourishes the scalp and can improve hair quality, but it does not stop hereditary hair loss. If someone comes in with advanced androgenetic alopecia, six treatments will not change what brought them in — and it is better they hear that before they start.” — Ana Maletić, MD, PhD

How it is performed

What a scalp mesotherapy treatment with us looks like

The whole procedure takes about half an hour and is a minimally invasive medical procedure.

Duration
about 30 minutes
Anesthesia
usually not needed
Protocol
most often a series of 6 treatments; the schedule is set by your findings
Performed by
Ana Maletić, MD, PhD

1 · Examination and scalp analysis. We measure the scalp with the TrichoLAB system. The examination is non-invasive and painless, and it records hair shaft thickness, density, and the number of hairs per follicular unit, separately by region. From those numbers we can see what kind of hair loss is involved and whether mesotherapy has anything to work with.

2 · Preparing the mix and the scalp. The composition is set by your findings, and the scalp is disinfected following medical protocol.

3 · Application. We apply the preparation with very fine needles, in a series of points across the area we have mapped out. Anesthesia is usually not needed.

4 · After the treatment. You return to your obligations right away, with no downtime. You receive written instructions for the next two days, because saunas, pools, and harsher hair care are avoided in that period.

The treatment is most often done in a series of six, and after the series we measure the scalp again and compare it with the initial findings. Progress is checked by measurement, not by memory of how the hair used to look.

Honest about the limits

The limits of scalp mesotherapy

The method has four limitations you should know before agreeing to a series.

It does not stop hereditary hair loss. Mesotherapy is not an approved treatment for androgenetic alopecia. It can support the scalp, but it does not change a genetically driven process.

It does not create new follicles. Where a follicle is gone, no preparation brings it back. In that situation, a conversation about a hair transplant is more honest than a series of treatments.

The evidence is weaker than the ads suggest. Published literature reviews show that studies exist and the results are mostly favorable, but the samples are small, the quality of the studies is modest, and there is no standardized preparation or protocol. Results are better when mesotherapy is combined with other therapies than when it stands alone.

Side effects exist, although they are rare. Most are mild and transient: redness, sensitivity, itching, swelling, or a small bruise. Rarer events are described in the literature — folliculitis and, very rarely, an inflammatory reaction and paradoxical increased hair shedding. That is why a physician performs the treatment, and why an examination comes first.

If your findings show that mesotherapy would change nothing for you, you will hear that at the first examination, together with a proposal that has support in the findings. A series of six treatments takes both time and money, so we suggest it only when there is a reason for it.

After the series

What the result looks like after six treatments

The result is not assessed on the day of the last treatment. In published studies of scalp mesotherapy, measurement is repeated several weeks after the series ends, and the change is looked for in hair count, density, and hair shaft thickness — the parameters trichoscopy records before the eye notices them. Because the hair growth cycle lasts months, the final picture comes together over that period, not within the series. Mesotherapy does not stop the course of hereditary hair loss, so even a good finding does not mean the scalp is no longer monitored. In some patients the change shows first in the small things: less hair stays on the brush after washing, and the hairstyle no longer has to be arranged so that something is covered.

Who we are

Who will be taking care of you

The Hair Center is led by Ana Maletić, MD, PhD, a specialist in plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery. She holds the ABHRS Diplomate title — the only physician in Croatia and one of 260 physicians worldwide to have earned it — and as a FISHRS she is the only physician from Croatia in regular membership of the ISHRS. In March 2026 she defended her doctoral thesis on the connection between hair transplantation and biopsychosocial factors of health.

So mesotherapy is not performed by someone who gives injections occasionally, but by a physician who works with the scalp every day and ties the composition of the preparation to measured findings. The Polyclinic has been operating since 1998; it was founded by her parents, and today two generations of the family work here. You can have the treatment in Zagreb and in Daruvar, with the same equipment and the same protocol.

Which method for whom

Patients most often ask us which hair therapy is the best — and the answer is that a universally best therapy does not exist. Each person’s hair loss has its own cause, phase, scalp condition, and degree of follicle preservation. That is why the same method gives a good result in one person and does not match the findings in another.

So we build the treatment plan around what is actually measured on your scalp. After the trichoscopic analysis we know what kind of hair loss is involved, how far the process has advanced, and whether there are still follicles with regenerative potential. From those findings comes one therapy, or a combination of methods that complement each other. Sometimes what comes out is that a treatment makes no sense in your case — and then we talk about a transplant or about monitoring, depending on the findings. You will hear that at the first examination, not after several paid treatments.

Below is an overview of the methods we perform, how they differ, and when each one comes into consideration.

Method How it works When it comes into consideration
Scalp mesotherapy Delivers a preparation of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, composed according to your findings, into the scalp skin to improve the conditions in which the follicle works. For weakened, thinning hair, early-stage thinning, and increased shedding after childbirth, illness, or a longer period of stress.
PRP treatment Uses plasma from your own blood and the growth factors it contains, so the treatment involves drawing your blood and preparing it. For increased shedding and thinning, when the follicles still exist but produce a thinner, weaker hair.
Polynucleotides Purified DNA fragments that reduce inflammation in the scalp and stimulate the formation of new blood vessels, improving the scalp’s blood supply. For diffuse thinning and a sensitive scalp, and when you prefer a solution that does not involve drawing blood.
Scalp filler Delivers a complex of peptides and hyaluronic acid into the scalp skin that acts on the follicle itself. Unlike facial fillers, the goal is not added volume but strengthening the existing hair. For weakened, thin hair and in the earlier phase of thinning, while the follicles are still active.
Laser hair growth treatment Uses a medical Er:YAG laser to improve the scalp’s blood supply and encourage follicles to shift from resting into the growth phase, with no needles and no downtime. For increased shedding and for strengthening existing hair, on its own or alongside other therapies.
Hair transplant Your own follicles from the donor area are moved to the areas where hair no longer grows. When certain regions no longer have active follicles, because no treatment can bring back hair that is gone there.

Hair transplant

How it works

Your own follicles from the donor area are moved to the areas where hair no longer grows.

When it comes into consideration

When certain regions no longer have active follicles, because no treatment can bring back hair that is gone there.

The methods are often combined, because the same scalp can simultaneously hold weakened follicles and areas where hair no longer grows. Then one method preserves and strengthens what is left, while the other replaces what has been permanently lost.

It is just as important to know what these methods cannot do. No therapy creates new follicles, so where a follicle is permanently lost, no number of treatments can change that. Nor does any of them remove the cause of hair loss. If a thyroid condition, a nutrient deficiency, or a hormonal change is behind the shedding, that finding is treated separately, and scalp therapy goes alongside it — not instead of it.

The right method for you is the one that matches the state of your scalp, regardless of how popular it currently is. That is why every plan starts with an analysis and a conversation — and only then comes the choice of treatment.

Patient reviews

What our patients say

Reviews taken from our Google Business profiles, Zagreb and Daruvar, translated from Croatian.

★★★★★

“A month ago I had an FUE hair transplant with Dr. Ana Maletić. From the professional side, my hair was done perfectly. I was lucky that my hair did not shed and started growing right away. Dr. Maletić’s expertise is obvious and makes her, without question, the leader in this field in Croatia. But my real satisfaction and gratitude lie in how the Polyclinic treats its patients. They are highly professional, yet approachable and compassionate at the same time. Nurses Matea M. and Valerija left a positive mark on my whole experience and made it more pleasant and calming. To anyone in Croatia looking for a hair transplant, I warmly recommend this Polyclinic. You will get top results and excellent care!”

“All praise to the entire staff of the polyclinic. I have already had my second PRP scalp treatment and I can only commend the whole team. I would especially like to praise the doctor for her exceptional expertise, patience, and warm approach. From the first examination to the procedure itself I felt safe and informed. The whole course of treatment was professional and well organized — I received clear and detailed instructions before, during, and after the procedure, which gave me extra confidence. The procedure itself was stress-free, with every step explained along the way, which meant a lot to me. The atmosphere is pleasant and relaxing, and the staff exceptionally kind and helpful. I am very satisfied with the results so far and look forward to further progress. I definitely recommend it to anyone considering a PRP scalp treatment — you are in safe and expert hands!”

“A few years ago I saw Dr. Ana Maletić for a facial hair correction using the FUE method, which made my beard somewhat denser. The results are fantastic — the work was done with such dedication and care. From the first meeting at the polyclinic she radiated confidence and knowledge of her work, along with a readiness and kindness to answer every question I had. All recommendations for Dr. Ana and her entire professional and friendly team.”

“I have been their patient and admirer for years. They have always known how to make my mom and me feel comfortable and welcome. My mom had a neck lift six years ago, and today I came in for PRP for hair growth. I cannot recommend them enough. Thank you, Ana!”

“I am very satisfied with Dr. Maletić’s results, from the beginning to the end of the hair transplant process. Five months after the procedure my hair looks phenomenal. The results I got, considering the number of grafts transplanted, pleasantly surprised me when compared with other clinics outside Croatia. As for the price, there is no big difference compared to clinics abroad, while the quality and expertise are on the level of top clinics. A big plus is that I did not have to travel outside the country, which made the whole process far less stressful for me.”

“I have rarely experienced such a professional, coordinated, and harmonious team. The atmosphere during the hair transplant was so pleasant that they even treated me to the occasional musical number. That relaxed atmosphere made the boredom of the procedure easier to bear. Although I do wonder whether some of you might be better off on a stage than in an operating room. Once again, a big thank you — I am already looking forward to the results in a few months!”

“A great experience, team, and final result. In short, I had an eyebrow transplant. Everything went exactly as Dr. Ana Maletić explained. The whole team was very kind and professional from start to finish, and I am now at peace because I finally have eyebrows. They look very natural, and the density is just as it should be. All recommendations!”

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

Does scalp mesotherapy hurt?

You feel it, but briefly. The preparation is applied with very fine needles into the surface layer of the scalp skin, and the injection points are soothed during the treatment. Anesthesia is usually not needed, and most people describe the treatment as uncomfortable rather than painful.

How many scalp mesotherapy treatments are needed?

Most often a series of six treatments, with the number and schedule set by your scalp findings, because not all types of hair loss respond the same way. After the series we measure the scalp again, and only then do we talk about whether continuing is needed.

When do the results of scalp mesotherapy show?

Not right away. The hair growth cycle lasts months, so the change in hair quality and thickness is assessed only after several months, by comparing the trichoscopic findings and photographs with the initial state. You will not hear promises from us that shedding stops after a month, because there is no backing for such a claim.

How does mesotherapy differ from a PRP treatment?

PRP uses your own plasma, so it involves drawing blood and preparing it, while mesotherapy applies a preparation of nutrients composed according to your findings. In some patients we combine them, because they complement each other — and which is more suitable for you shows in the scalp analysis.

Does scalp mesotherapy have side effects?

Most are mild and transient: redness, sensitivity, itching, swelling, or a small bruise at the injection site. Rarer events are also described in the professional literature, such as folliculitis and, very rarely, inflammatory reactions and paradoxical increased hair shedding. That is why the treatment is performed by a physician, under medical conditions, and after a scalp examination.

Does mesotherapy help with hereditary hair loss?

It can support the scalp, but it does not stop the hereditary process and is not an approved treatment for androgenetic alopecia. With advanced hair loss, the treatments alone will not change what brought you in, so an honest conversation about other solutions is more useful than a series of injections.
