Profhilo in Croatia

Profhilo is an injectable treatment intended to improve skin hydration, elasticity, and quality, without adding volume or deliberately changing the contours of the face.

The room at Polyclinic Maletić where the Profhilo treatment is performed

Profhilo is intended for people who want to improve the hydration, elasticity, and overall quality of their skin without adding volume. The protocol for the face generally includes two treatments, four weeks apart, and the result is assessed once it is complete. Before we begin, we assess the condition of your skin, the indication, and the change that is realistic to expect.

Is this for me?

What Profhilo is, and how it differs from a filler

Profhilo is an injectable preparation of hyaluronic acid that contains molecules of high and low molecular weight in the form of stable hybrid complexes. Two milliliters of the preparation contain 64 milligrams of hyaluronic acid, 32 milligrams of each kind. Stabilization is achieved through a thermal process, without the chemical cross-linkers used in classic fillers, and the product has carried the European mark of conformity since 2015.

A dermal filler and Profhilo are applied with different goals. A filler is applied at a specific spot to replace volume or change the contours of the face. Profhilo spreads through the tissue and is intended to improve skin hydration, elasticity, and quality, without deliberate volumization.

What bioremodeling means

Bioremodeling refers to gradual changes in the structure of the skin, including processes related to collagen and elastin, rather than the replacement of volume at a specific spot. The effect is not immediate — it develops over several weeks, which is why the result of Profhilo is not assessed right after the first treatment.

What Profhilo does not do

Profhilo does not replace lost volume, does not lift markedly descended contours, and is not intended to remove expression lines. It is also not intended to deliberately change the shape of the face. If the main problem is loss of volume, pronounced laxity, or expression lines, another procedure may be more appropriate.

How it is performed

What a Profhilo treatment with us looks like

The skin is first cleansed, and the preparation is then injected at five predetermined points on each side of the treated area. The technique is called BAP, and the layout of the points is adapted to the anatomy and to the distribution of the preparation with a limited number of injections. Besides the face, the treatment is also performed on the neck, the décolletage, and the hands.

The BAP technique and the two-treatment protocol

The published protocol calls for two treatments, four weeks apart. The change develops gradually, and the full effect is assessed once the protocol is complete. The price of €400.00 applies to one treatment for the face.

What to expect in the first days

Immediately after the treatment, redness, minor swelling, or a bruise may appear at the injection points. Redness and swelling most often subside within the first days, while a bruise may last somewhat longer. Special recovery is generally not needed, and the return to everyday activities depends on how your skin reacts.

More pronounced reactions, including late swelling or nodules, are described more rarely. In worldwide post-market surveillance, over three years and among more than 40,000 treated patients, twelve reports of side effects were recorded, none of which was rated as serious. Since these are voluntary reports by physicians, the authors caution that underreporting of milder reactions cannot be ruled out.

Honest about the limits

When Profhilo is not the right treatment, or should be postponed

With markedly lax skin, Profhilo cannot make up for weakened tissue support, nor can it achieve the effect of a surgical or other lifting procedure. It is also not intended to replace lost volume. If a marked and immediately visible change to the contours of the face is expected, Profhilo is generally not the right treatment.

“Profhilo is more appropriate when skin laxity is not pronounced. With a greater loss of support, another procedure needs to be considered.”

Circumstances in which we postpone the treatment

The treatment is postponed in the case of an active infection or inflammation at the application site. International expert recommendations on late inflammatory reactions also list a recent dental procedure, active autoimmune disease, and a recent viral illness or vaccination as circumstances that call for caution or postponement. The safety of preparations of this kind during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established, so the treatment is not performed during that period.

That is why the exam also includes questions about recent illnesses, vaccination, dental procedures, and other circumstances that can affect the safety of the treatment.

Why trust us

What the evidence says about Profhilo

For Profhilo there is published laboratory and clinical literature. Laboratory research has shown increased expression of elastin and of markers of tissue renewal, while clinical studies record improved skin hydration and reduced water loss through the skin.

Most of those studies are open-label, cover small samples and short follow-up periods, and some were conducted with the manufacturer's support. The results should therefore be interpreted with those methodological limitations in mind.

Profhilo or Sunekos

Profhilo and Sunekos differ in composition, application technique, and protocol. For the face, Profhilo is generally applied in two treatments, four weeks apart, while Sunekos involves a larger number of visits. The choice is based on the condition of your skin, the expected change, and your ability to complete the recommended protocol.

Price

Profhilo face 2 ml: €400.00 · Profhilo body 2x3 ml: €750.00

The table compares composition, method of application, protocol, and price. The choice of preparation still depends on the condition of your skin, the indication, and the expected change, which are assessed at the exam.

Neither of these two preparations is a substitute for botulinum toxin for expression lines, nor for a filler when volume needs to be replaced. Both are primarily intended to improve skin quality, not to deliberately change the contours of the face.

Who we are

Who performs the Profhilo treatment, and where

The treatment is performed by Mario Bartol, MD, specialist in surgery and a member of the Polyclinic's professional team since 2008. His work focuses on injectable and laser procedures.

During both visits, at both locations, the same team of nurses accompanies you. Continuity of the team matters for assessing the result once the protocol is complete and for monitoring any possible later reactions.

After the protocol

How the result is assessed after two treatments

The result is assessed at a follow-up visit once the protocol is complete, by comparing the condition of your skin with photographs taken before the treatment. The change develops over several weeks and can be hard to notice from day to day. Published measurements record an increase in skin hydration and improvement in its texture and tone, with an effect followed in studies for up to about six months.

Profhilo does not stop the natural aging of the skin. The need for and timing of repeating the protocol are assessed individually.

A big thank you to Dr. Maletić and the whole team for making my wish come true. The procedure was painless, as was the recovery, and the results were visible after just a few days. The whole team was extremely kind and cheerful, and the atmosphere very pleasant. Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

Is the Profhilo treatment painful?

The preparation is injected at five points on each side, so there are few injections and the treatment is short. A brief stinging sensation is felt, which passes in a few seconds, and sensitivity varies from person to person.

How many Profhilo treatments are needed?

The published protocol calls for two treatments, four weeks apart. The price of €400.00 applies to one treatment for the face.

When are the results of Profhilo visible?

The change generally begins to show one to two weeks after the first application, and the full effect is assessed after the second. That is why we do not make the first assessment of the result before the protocol is complete.

What is the difference between Profhilo and a dermal filler?

A dermal filler adds volume at a specific spot and can change the contours of the face. Profhilo is not intended for volumization, but for improving skin hydration, elasticity, and quality. The treatments are therefore chosen according to different indications.

Profhilo or Sunekos — which one to choose?

Both treatments are intended to improve skin quality, and neither is intended to add volume. They differ in composition, application technique, and the number of visits, so the choice is based on the condition of your skin, the expected change, and your ability to complete the full protocol. A comparison table with composition, protocols, and prices is on this page.

Are there situations in which the treatment should be postponed?

Yes. We postpone the treatment in the case of an active infection or inflammation at the application site, and caution is also needed after a recent dental procedure, a recent viral illness, or vaccination, because late inflammatory reactions have been described in those circumstances. The safety of the preparation during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established.

What is the price of a Profhilo treatment?

Profhilo face 2 ml costs €400.00 per treatment, and the protocol generally calls for two treatments. The price is published in our price list.
